A boating party was shooting a music video, and watching a rainbow when a strange object was seen floating on the horizon, off the shores of Marquette, Michigan in Lake Superior. Some feel that it is a ghost ship, or other paranormal apparition. The sighting occurred Saturday evening early October 2016 in good weather.
The Great Lakes boast more than 6,000 ship wrecks with over 30,000 lives lost, is this a specter of some long-lost vessel? The video has caused a YouTube sensation as viewer’s watch the eerie phenomenon slowly hovering above the waters of the historic lake.
If one reviews the video is it possible that the ghastly oddity may well be the Granite Island Lighthouse which lies 8 miles off the coast of Marquette?
The fact that the object appears to float above the water is a strong indication of a Fata Morgana – a Superior mirage.
Under certain conditions light can bend when a warm air presence slides above colder air below, creating an inversion. This can allow an object in the distance to become displaced and appear to “float” in mid-air just above the horizon. The video demonstrates what maybe some of the proper conditions to let this phenomenon occur. Still clear air is one of the important factors.
The Lighthouse may also be a prime candidate due to its location presented on the map. It is certainly visible in the distance and may be simply have appeared distorted due to the principles of a mirage.
