The Mysterious and Paranormal Active Mount Shasta in California

Rising over 14,000 feet above the forests of Northern California, Mount Shasta is one of the most striking natural landmarks in the American West—and one of its most mysterious. For centuries, this snow-capped volcano has been surrounded by myths, legends, and countless reports of strange and unexplained phenomena. From ancient underground cities to UFO sightings, spiritual portals, and ghostly encounters, Mount Shasta has earned its reputation as a magnet for the paranormal and the mystical.

Long before modern explorers arrived, the Native American tribes of the region—such as the Wintu, Modoc, and Shasta—considered Mount Shasta a sacred place. In their oral traditions, the mountain was the dwelling of powerful spirits, gods, and goddesses. The Wintu believed that the mountain was a portal where spirits could pass between worlds, while the Modoc spoke of Skell, the Creator, who descended from heaven to reside on Shasta’s peak. To this day, many Indigenous people treat the mountain as a sacred site of prayer and ceremony, where the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds is thin, and at times the veil is lifted, in which the physical world and the spiritual world meet.

One of Mount Shasta’s most famous legends is that of Lemuria, a mythical lost continent said to have sunk beneath the Pacific Ocean thousands of years ago. According to the tale, survivors of Lemuria fled underground and established a hidden city called Telos beneath Mount Shasta. Stories about Telos began circulating in the late 19th century, popularized by writers like Frederick Spencer Oliver and later by occult movements such as Theosophy. These sources describe the Lemurians as tall, wise beings with golden skin and advanced spiritual knowledge, living in vast subterranean halls illuminated by crystals. Some modern-day visitors claim to have encountered these beings—or at least seen mysterious lights or doorways that appear to lead inside the mountain.

In the 20th century, Mount Shasta became a hot spot for UFO sightings. Locals and travelers alike have reported glowing orbs hovering near the summit, mysterious crafts darting through the sky, and even unidentified lights entering what appear to be openings in the mountainside.

One of the most famous accounts occurred in the 1930s, when British prospector Guy Ballard claimed to have met an ascended master named Saint Germain on the slopes of Mount Shasta. Ballard’s story became the foundation of the “I AM” spiritual movement, which linked the mountain to extraterrestrial and higher-dimensional beings. Today, the area continues to attract UFO enthusiasts and spiritual seekers who believe the mountain is an inter-dimensional gateway.

In addition to UFO activity, there are numerous ghost stories and reports of vanishing people around Mount Shasta. Hikers have described hearing voices, footsteps, or chanting deep in the forest when no one else was around. Some claim to have encountered glowing figures that disappear into the trees, or portals that seem to distort time and distance.

Mysterious disappearances—often attributed to the mountain’s powerful energies—have become part of Shasta’s modern folklore. While most can be explained by the rugged terrain and unpredictable weather, others remain unsolved, feeding speculation about the mountain’s supernatural forces.

A Center of Spiritual Energy

Today, Mount Shasta is considered by many to be one of the world’s major spiritual vortexes—places where energy is believed to flow strongly from the Earth. People from across the globe visit for meditation, healing, and metaphysical retreats. New Age practitioners, shamans, and mystics often describe feeling a powerful, uplifting energy on its slopes, as though the mountain itself were alive and conscious. Visitors frequently describe Mount Shasta as more than a mountain—it is a living presence. Whether one views it as a geological wonder, a sacred site, or a gateway to another dimension, there is no denying the strange magnetism that surrounds it.

The Vanishing Mysteries of Mount Shasta: People Who Disappeared Without a Trace

Mount Shasta, the snow-capped volcanic giant of Northern California, is not only one of the state’s most breathtaking natural landmarks — it is also one of its most mysterious. Rising over 14,000 feet above sea level, the mountain has long been surrounded by tales of paranormal activity, UFO sightings, secret underground civilizations, and strange disappearances. Over the years, numerous hikers, campers, and even children have gone missing under baffling circumstances on and around Mount Shasta — feeding its reputation as one of America’s most enigmatic places.

A Place of Legends and Lost People that have only deepened the mountain’s mystique.

The Case of the Missing Boy (1950s)

One of the most frequently told stories involves a young boy who vanished near Mount Shasta in the early 1950s. The child reportedly disappeared for several hours while his family was camping in the area. A massive search ensued — and when he was found, he was unharmed but strangely quiet. Later, he allegedly told his parents that he had been “taken underground” by a woman who “looked just like him” but wasn’t his mother. She spoke to him telepathically and showed him “robots” in a cavern beneath the mountain. The story, though unverifiable, has become part of Mount Shasta folklore — cited in books on missing persons and paranormal phenomena, such as those by author David Paulides.

The Disappearance of Geraldine Large (1999)

In August 1999, Geraldine “Gerry” Large, a 55-year-old woman from Medford, Oregon, vanished while hiking near the Panther Meadow area on Mount Shasta. She was described as an experienced hiker who knew the terrain well. Search teams and helicopters combed the area for over a week, yet no trace was found — no clothing, no footprints, and no scent trail for tracking dogs. Her disappearance remains unsolved. Some locals point to the treacherous terrain and unpredictable weather, while others whisper about “portals,” energy vortices, and strange lights frequently reported around the same area.

The Case of David Paulides

Mount Shasta has appeared multiple times in David Paulides’ “Missing 411” investigations — a series documenting unexplained vanishings in U.S. national parks and wilderness areas. Paulides, a former law enforcement officer, has identified a recurring cluster of disappearances in and around Mount Shasta. Many share odd consistencies: sudden weather changes, lost time, victims found in places previously searched, or bodies discovered miles away in improbable locations.

These patterns have led to rampant speculation — from dimensional shifts to alien abductions — although skeptics attribute them to natural hazards, disorientation, or hypothermia.

The Missing Hiker Mystery (2011)

In 2011, another puzzling disappearance made headlines when a hiker went missing near the Bunny Flat Trailhead. Witnesses said he was preparing for a day hike and was well-equipped. When he failed to return, rescuers searched for nearly two weeks in clear weather — yet no trace was found. Even seasoned search-and-rescue professionals expressed frustration at the complete lack of clues. One rescuer later stated: “It’s as if the mountain swallowed him up. There was nothing — no sign he was ever there.”

More Analyzed Paranormal Theories, the “Shasta Triangle, and  Further Skepticism

Because of these and other cases, paranormal researchers have labeled the region part of the “Shasta Triangle” — an area said to be a hot spot for inter-dimensional activity, similar to the Bermuda Triangle. Reports from hikers include glowing orbs, mysterious fog, strange time lapses, and encounters with beings described as “tall, robed men” or “energy entities.” The mountain’s magnetic field anomalies and high quartz content have even led some to suggest it could be an “energy vortex,” amplifying spiritual or dimensional phenomena. . Skeptics point to more earthly reasons to counter act paranormal claims of the territory : the rugged wilderness, sudden weather shifts, deep lava tubes, and volcanic caverns that could conceal a lost person indefinitely. The combination of steep terrain, fatigue, and poor visibility can easily turn a simple hike into a fatal misstep. Yet even experienced hikers, those who knew the area intimately, have disappeared — and that lingering mystery keeps the legends alive. But, were these experienced hikers killed by dangerous wild beasts, and then eaten by them?

The magnetic field anomalies can be the result of all three factors. First consideration is the presence of  distinct subsurface structures. The second activity is the presence of lava flows relative to breccias is higher within the western part of the volcano, thereby increasing its magnetization. The third activity is the titanomagnetite minerals in basalt and gabbros, which is magnetized when ocean crust is formed at the ridge. As magma rises to the surface and cools; the rocks acquires a thermoremanent magnetization in the direction of the field

Mount Shasta continues to draw adventurers, mystics, and truth-seekers from around the world. To some, it is a place of spiritual awakening — to others, a realm of powerful, unexplainable forces. But for the families of those who vanished there, it remains a haunting reminder that this mountain may never give up all of its secrets. Whether the missing fell victim to nature’s dangers or to something stranger beyond understanding, Mount Shasta endures as one of North America’s most enigmatic — and unsettling — landscapes.

Mount Shasta — a towering volcanic peak in Northern California — has long been a magnet for lore, mystery, and strange sightings. Here is a deeper look at UFOs, strange lights, ghost tales, and other paranormal or mythic stories associated with the mountain:

Strange Lights & UFO-Phenomena

Local lore says mysterious lights have been seen on the mountain since before settlers arrived. These lights are often reported at dawn, dusk, or around midnight. In one striking instance, a Forest Service officer photographed a glowing orb near Mt. Shasta in February 2020. The Forest Service later identified the object as a lenticular cloud. There are many reports of multiple orb-shaped lights, sometimes moving, sometimes pulsing or stroking like strobe lights. For example, from a recent camping story: one orb, then three more joining, hovering and flashing for long periods.

Legends, Mythic Inhabitants, & Lost Civilizations

A major recurring legend is that of the Lemurians: a lost, advanced civilization of a submerged continent said to have escaped catastrophe and taken refuge under Mt. Shasta, in a hidden city called Telos. Some stories say these beings occasionally emerge, or leave signs: lights, robed figures, spiritual energies. Edward Lanser, in the early 20th century, reported seeing the mountain ablaze with reddish-green light from a train, and was told by a fellow traveler that it was “Lemurians.”

Ghosts, Apparitions & Shadow Beings

Native American traditions around Mt. Shasta include belief in spiritual presences. For example, the Wintu tribe consider much of the mountain sacred. There are stories about hearing children’s laughter, voices, or seeing people vanish — sometimes from trails or caves. There are modern reports from hikers and campers of full-body apparitions: people or figures seen during the day, sometimes solid seeming, then disappearing. Also shadow-like forms that seem human yet lack detail, vanish when approached. Paranormal anecdotes also include hearing chanting in unknown tongues, or soft whispers at night, especially near sacred meadows or caves.

Bigfoot Creatures and Sasquatch Sightings have been reported on Mount Shasta and near the mountain.

Natural Phenomena & Alternative Explanations

Many of these sightings might have more mundane or natural explanations: Lenticular clouds: These clouds form over mountaintops under certain atmospheric conditions. Their “saucer-shaped” appearance often leads people to think they are UFOs. The 2020 glowing orb photographed by a Forest Service officer was later attributed to such a cloud. Reflections, atmospheric light effects: Light refracted through ice crystals, snowfields, or mist can produce glowing orbs, halos, shimmering appearances, or even mirages. Mis-identification of aircraft, satellites, drones, or even stars under unusual conditions.

And where cases of bigfoot and sasquatch mistaken sightings of bears that were standing up, moving around; and especially walking a very short span seen from a considerable distance?

The mountain is visually prominent, often seen from far away; that makes lights or atmospheric oddities more noticeable. It has deep roots in Native American myth, which provides a cultural framework for interpreting strange events. Spiritual significance tends to amplify people’s attune-ment to odd things. New Age and occult interests have also popularized legends (like Lemuria, Telos), which pull together folklore, metaphysics, UFO lore, and reports from locals & visitors.

Mount Shasta stands as a unique intersection between the natural and the supernatural—a place where myth, mystery, and spirituality intertwine. Its snowy peak continues to draw scientists, mystics, adventurers, and dreamers alike, each searching for something beyond the ordinary. Whether it is the legendary Lemurians, UFOs in the night sky, or the mountain’s undeniable spiritual aura, Mount Shasta remains one of America’s most mysterious places and site of alleged supernaturalism.
