Five Haunted Places in London
London’s long history has produced countless ghost stories. This episode visits five of the capital’s most atmospheric locations, separating what is known from what has been repeated through legend, reported encounters, and local tradition.
The Tower of London
For nearly a thousand years, the Tower has served as a royal fortress, prison, palace, and place of execution. Its most famous reported apparition is Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII, who was executed within the Tower walls in 1536. Her ghost is said to appear near the site of her burial and around the White Tower.
The Spaniards Inn
Standing on the edge of Hampstead Heath, the Spaniards Inn dates back centuries and has long been linked in legend to the highwayman Dick Turpin. Stories place his ghost—and even that of his horse—near the old coaching inn, although the historical details behind the connection remain debated.
The Viaduct Tavern
This Victorian gin palace stands near the former site of Newgate Prison. Visitors and staff have reported unexplained sounds and unsettling experiences, giving rise to tales that the tavern may be haunted by former prisoners or others connected with the area’s darker past.
The Ten Bells
The Ten Bells pub is closely associated with Whitechapel and the world surrounding the Jack the Ripper murders of 1888. Its history, atmosphere, and proximity to key locations have made it part of East London’s enduring Ripper lore and a setting for numerous ghostly claims.
50 Berkeley Square
Once described as one of London’s most haunted houses, 50 Berkeley Square inspired Victorian-era stories of a mysterious presence in an upstairs room. Over time, rumor and retelling turned the Mayfair address into one of the city’s most notorious supernatural legends.
