Experience Pompeii’s Final Hours
The traditional date is August 24, 79 AD. Pompeii awakens beneath a mountain its people do not recognize as a volcano. The marketplaces are busy, bread is baking, wine is being sold, and families assume tomorrow will arrive as it always has.
Then Mount Vesuvius erupts. Day becomes night as ash and pumice bury streets and crush rooftops. The harbor offers no escape. Marcus and Lucia Petronius gather their young son, load their donkey cart, and attempt to flee through darkness, falling stone, fire, and fear as the city disappears behind them.
Across the Bay of Naples, Roman admiral and naturalist Pliny the Elder sees the enormous volcanic cloud rising above the coast. Rather than sail away, he orders his fleet toward the disaster in an attempt to rescue people trapped near Stabiae.
A Historically Grounded Dramatic Re-Creation
The eruption of Vesuvius, the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and Pliny the Elder’s rescue mission are drawn from the historical record. Marcus, Lucia, and their son provide a dramatized family story through which listeners can experience the fear, confusion, and human cost of the catastrophe.
The production is presented primarily in English, with select Italian lines used to deepen the atmosphere and carry listeners into the world of ancient Roman Italy.
