Five Famous Haunted Houses in the USA

The Jennie Wade House, 528 Baltimore Street, Gettysburg, PA 17325. On July 1, 1863, the first day of the battle of Gettysburg during the USA Civil War, between isolated units of the Army of Northern Virginia under Confederate General Robert E. Lee and the Army of the Potomac under Union Major General George C. Meade, more than 150 bullets hit the McClellan house; the same day Mary Virginia Wade, nicknamed Jennie Wade travelled there to help her sister, Georgia Ann Wade McClellan with her newborn child. On July 3 at about 8:30 pm, while Jennie was baking bread for Union soldiers, a bullet rumored to come from an Confederate sharpshooter, broke through two wooden doors: the kitchen and the parlor doors, killing Jennie Wade dead instantly. She died at the age of 20 and was the only direct civilian casualty of the battle, Many people have claimed to see her ghost.

The Farnsworth House, 401 Baltimore Street, Gettysburg, PA 17325. This farm house was built in 1810. The name of the residence came from Union General Elon Farnsworth who died during the Battle of Gettysburg. The Farnsworth House was the site of rebel sharpshooters that is believed to be the site of the sniper where the musket ball that killed Jennie Wade was fired.  During the US Civil War, the house acquired, by count, 135 bullet holes. The 10 room mansion later on became an inn and functions as a bed and breakfast. There have been numerous reports of strange dark figures; supernatural apparitions seen. The ghost of Mary, a mid wife, who died in the house, reportedly wearing a blue gown, has been sighted by patrons, among other eerie spiritual entities. Allegedly, Mary’s ghost likes to comfort guests by sitting on their beds.

The Whaley House, 2476 San Diego Avenue, San Diego, California 92110. This former home is now a museum managed by the Save Our Heritage Organization. The US Department of Commerce, in the 1960’s, designated the Whaley House as an officially haunted house because people claiming to often hear heavy footstep believed to be from the ghost of “Yankee Jim” Robinson, who was hung on the property in 1852 before the house was built. The mansion, a Greek revival style residence, was built in 1857. Other ghostly sightings include owners Thomas Whaley and Anna Whaley. Anna Whaley was allegedly seen by famous television host Regis Philbin and even the spirit of the Whaley family dog, a fox terrier named Dolly Vardon was seen by roaming the premises by a number of people.

Lizzy Borden House, 92 Second Street, Fall River, Massachusetts 02721. This is the place where wo murders, by use of a hatchet, were committed on August 4, 1892. The stepmother of Lizzie Borden-Abby Borden, age 64 years and the father of Lizzie, at age 70 years. Although Lizzie, at age 32, was arrested for the murders and spent 10 months in jail, she was later acquitted for lack of evidence. People have claimed to see the ghosts of  Andrew Borden, Abby Borden and Lizzie Borden. Mysterious claims also were of hearing doors open and close, followed by footsteps; and feelings of being touched by something or someone, including mysterious brushes when people were on the stairs and other parts of the house.

The Villisca Axe Murder House, Villisca, Iowa. Between the evening of June 9, 1912 and the early morning of June 10, 1912, in the town of Villisca, Montgomery County, in south western Iowa, 6 members of the Moore family and two house guests were found bludgeoned to death in the Moore household. The massacre remains unsolved to this day. Reports of mysterious supernatural phenomena include hearing children’s voices, falling lamps, moving ladders, and flying objects are common occurrences to visitors. There have been other claims of seeing apparitions, hearing strange noises, and strange heavy footsteps.
